Laser Eye Surgery Consultation

Looking Into Laser Eye Surgery? Visit Toronto Centre Optometry

There are more corrective laser surgeries available today than ever before. Patients who may not have been able to have surgery done 20 years ago now have a variety of options to grant them clearer vision.

At Toronto Centre Optometry, we will explain all of your refractive surgery options.

Visit Us For a Consultation

We will begin your consultation by performing a thorough eye examination to determine what level of correction is needed. We will also ensure that there are no conditions or eye problems that would make you an inappropriate candidate for laser eye surgery.

Once we have completed your examination, we will explain the procedure which best suits your needs and give you an idea of what to expect. This is also your opportunity to ask any questions you might have and address any concerns that may have come to mind. Your comfort is important to us, so we will be sure to take our time responding to your questions, ensuring you understand and are satisfied with our answers.

Your Eye Health is in Capable Hands

Pending the results of your consultation, we will refer you to an ophthalmologist for surgery. Nothing is more important to us than the health and safety of our patients, which is why we refer them only to exceptionally skilled and experienced ophthalmologists.

We will always follow up with you after your procedure to ensure you are healing properly and to test your vision.

Types of Laser Refractive Surgery

There are a variety of corrective surgeries available. We will recommend the one that is most likely to yield the best results for you.

PRK was the first refractive surgery ever to employ the use of lasers. Many doctors still prefer it for patients with thinner corneas. The ophthalmologist will use a laser to reshape your corneas, thereby correcting your refractive error. This procedure only takes about 10 minutes per eye.

Your vision should become clear within a week of surgery, and your vision should stabilise within a month. Be sure to avoid strenuous activity while you heal.

LASIK is currently the most popular refractive surgery in the world. It is designed to produce similar results to PRK but with faster recovery.

The ophthalmologist creates a small flap in the outer layers of the cornea, folding it back to expose the middle layers. They will then use a laser to reshape the middle layers of the cornea, replacing the flap when they are done.

Patients usually find their vision has cleared within 24 hours and has stabilised within two weeks. Be sure to avoid any strenuous activity as well as anything that could cause flap complications while you heal.

Rather than focusing on the cornea like PRK and LASIK does, ICL focuses on correction through the lens. ICL involves implanting a small lens behind the iris but in front of your eye’s natural lens. The implanted lens works very much like a permanent contact lens. The implant is soft and flexible, allowing it to be folded in half and implanted through a very small incision.

Because your own natural lens is still intact, your eye maintains its natural autofocus ability.

RLE is similar to ICL in that it focuses on correcting the refractive error through the lens. However it is different in that where ICL involves the implantation of a supplementary lens, RLE involves the implantation of an entirely new lens, replacing the natural lens altogether. This is most often recommended for patients over age 50 and is similar to the surgery used to correct cataracts.
